Sunday Stash Report: The Droids I was Looking For

image

Yesterday I finished the twin-sized Droid quilt from The Stitch’s Droid Quilt Along.  It used nine and a half yards, but I did need to buy an extra half yard of the white Kona background.  This concludes my Christmas sewing, just in time.  I experimented with using my tablet for these photos, not too impressed.

I really like the vertical straight line quilting, but as always with walking foot quilting, it seemed to take forever, and that long quilt got heavy on my shoulders.

image

I used two classic Star Wars prints for the backing, pieced in a giant Disappearing Four Patch.

This week:  + .5 yards,  – 9.5 yards
This year:  + 134.75 yards,  – 184.25 yards
Net fabric destashed  in 2015:  49.50 yards

And, of course I had it officially tested.  It passed!

Sunday Stash Report: 12/6/15

image

In the two weeks since I reported, there’s been lots of sewing, but also some buying.  I got three and a quarter yards of burgundy and gray fabric at Patchwork Plus, Dayton, VA, while we were visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday.  I used most of that up in the 54″ x 72″ commissioned quilt I made.  It took seven and a half yards, and the coaster sets took a quarter yard.

This week:  + 3.25 yards,  – 7.75 yards
This year:  + 134.25 yards,  – 174.75 yards
Net fabric destashed  in 2015:  40.50 yards

Well, forty is getting close to my goal of destashing fifty yards this year, right?  I’ll make it.

Hope you’re sewing, and that you have good help!  We’re linking up to Judy’s report at Patchwork Times.

November/December Goals

PicMonkey Collage11-30Wow, the year is really winding down!  I sewed a lot this month, but didn’t quite complete my goals.

November Goals

  1. Piece the top from the Hashtag blocks when they arrive.  Nope.  This just did not happen.
  2. Bind the scrappy Star Wars baby quilt.  Yes, here.
  3. Catch up on the Droid Quilt Along.  Pretty darn close.  I am ready to make the sashing, then assemble the top.
  4. Make scrappy Maple Leaf blocks for Kat’s November Block Drive.  Yes, here.

In addition to my goals, I made a 60″ x 80″ Baseball quilt, six pillowcases, and a pair of potholders.

December Goals

  1. Finish the Droid Quilt Along quilt.
  2. Make Aggie commissioned quilt.
  3. Make string blocks for Kat’s December Block Drive.
  4. Optional:  Assemble Hashtag quilt top.

Keeping this list short because we may be traveling for a week or so in December.

Hope you accomplished everything you wanted to this month.

Eleven and a quarter yards of fabric came in this week, but I’ve used a lot of it.

The blocks for Kat took one yard (of older scraps).

image

The Baseball quilt took ten and a half yards.  Here’s a picture before I’ve buried my thread ends or washed it.  I’ll do a post on it soon.

This week:  + 11.25 yards,  – 11.5 yards
This year:  + 127.50 yards,  – 160.75 yards
Net fabric destashed  in 2015:  33.25 yards

(Corrected 11/21/15.)

Not the right direction, but more use is coming!

Lots of progress Wednesday

image

I have lots of projects stacked up, but I’m working away at them and making some good progress.   In a little open spot, I made these six maple leaf  blocks for Kat’s November block drive.  They’re a little repetitive,  but I found I had a ton of triangles in the right size, so in they went.

image

The next project I’m working on is a quilt for a sick friend.   Unlike most of my projects, I had to order all the fabric for it.  The backing and border fabric came first, so I pieced the backing and cut the borders.  Yesterday the rest of the fabric arrived.  I had to wash the darks four times before the Color Catchers came out clean.  Today I sewed 54 blocks drunkards path blocks.  Yes, it’s a baseball quilt.

Hope you’re doing well in all your projects.

Sunday Stash Report: 11/8/15

The numbers are going to be spinning backwards for a while, but I’m confident they will come out okay by the end of the year.  I’m in the midst of several large quilts that have to be done by Christmas, so the yardage will just come flying out again.  You’ll see.

This week I made good progress on the Droid Quilt Along blocks (I had fallen behind), but the only thing finished to count out was the Scrappy Star Wars Baby quilt, three and a half yards.

Six yards came in (but more is on the way…).

This week:  + 6 yards,  – 3.5 yards
This year:  + 116.25 yards,  – 149.25 yards
Net fabric destashed  in 2015:  33 yards

How are you doing?  We still have lots of time before Christmas!  Mmmhmmm.

One Lovely Blog Award

img_0204

I won an award!  Thank you to Melanie at Thousand Needles blog for nominating me!  If you don’t follow Melanie, you should.  She has a life-simplifying and a gratitude thread going on, along with progress on her beautiful quilting, and her family.

Here are the rules for this award:
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you.
  • Display the banner/sticker/logo on your blog.
  • Share 7 facts or things about yourself.
  • Nominate 5 bloggers that you admire and inform nominees by commenting on their blog.
 About Me:
  1. I’m retired after thirty years of teaching Art (k-6) and elementary (4-6).  This is how I have time to make the quilts!
  2. I’m married, for 32 years, and my husband’s retired, too
  3. We have one son, aged 21.  He has Asperger’s Syndrome/high-functioning autism.  He is currently attending college, loving it, and living with friends in an apartment.  He belongs to several organizations and is doing fairly well academically.
  4. I did my first serious machine sewing at age 11, when I made my Easter dress, with my mother’s help, with set in sleeves and a back zipper.  For the fabric, think Peter Max depicts a flower garden.
  5. In spite of being a successful garment sewer for many years, I don’t like to anymore.  I don’t even really like sewing bags.  Give me flat fabric in small patches.
  6. I like to cook, sometimes, usually when I’m inspired by fresh produce from my garden or the farmer’s market.
  7. I’m a Girl Scout.  I went all the way through the program as a girl, then led troops for many years.  I’m still registered.

September/October Goals 2015

PicMonkey CollageIt was a great month, goal-wise!  I don’t set ambitious goals, because things always pop up that I’m not counting on.  This month it was twenty-four Wonky Hashtag blocks I made for the #Twilter exchange, and a little Super Secret block.  Plus canning and travel and life.  But I like this list because it does focus me and prompt me to get a few things finished.  The UFO wall hanging is a case in point.  It was old (five years?) and I wasn’t interested in it at all.  But I dragged it out because it was the only goal I hadn’t achieved and I wanted a sweep.  I decided that it should be a throw-sized quilt (The Gold and Turquoise Quilt), which is good because there was a lot of fabric there.  I did fix the mistake in the top, and add a narrow border, and now I’m working on piecing a bunch of scraps into the back.

September Goals

  1.  Finish coastal wall hanging.  Yes!  All done, right here.
  2. Quilt and bind Christmas quilt.  Yes!  Here it is.
  3. Make a baby quilt from some floral scraps I’ve pulled together, probably D4P.  Yes!  This one.
  4. Work on UFO wall hanging.  Yes!  Decided to make it a quilt.  The top is finished, working on the back.

On to October!

October Goals

  1.  Piece and quilt Boxed Elephant baby quilt commission.
  2. Quilt and bind Gold and Turquoise quilt.
  3. Piece top from Twilter Hashtag blocks.
  4. Make new baby quilt with elephant scraps.
Tomato Soup

Tomato Soup!

How did you do with your goals?  Hope you’re at least getting into the sewing room when you can.  Happy Autumn!

My Design Wall Today

image

This is what happens when you are sewing along in the zone and don’t pay attention.  It will look much better next time you see it, when the bottom two rows are turned the other way.  And I did a nice job matching those points, too…

Just thought I’d share my process!

The Very Large Christmas Quilt, Finished!

IMG_2455So, how large is it?  It’s 64″ by 80″ now that it’s washed.  That’s not so very large, a nice twin size, but it’s just much larger than I meant it.

IMG_2461How did it grow so large?  Lack of planning on my part, I guess, and a series of design decisions based on scale.  I used the Four Patch Star tutorial from The Missouri Star Quilt Company. I understood that it makes 16″ blocks. (I really recommend this pattern if you need to make a big quilt fast!)  I can do the math.  I’m sure I started off thinking that I would just use six of these blocks for a throw-sized quilt.  When I mocked it up in EQ7, it was clear that the stars were too large and looked way out of scale.  That was when I went to twelve of them.  It looked much better.  I don’t think I considered the border.  Or how large the repeat was in my fabric.  Anyway, it’s a lovely large quilt, and I didn’t have much trouble quilting it on my dsm.

starOne goal of this quilt was to use some of my large stash of older Christmas fabric.  It’s all pretty, and I’m down to mostly red and green traditional prints that go well together.  I cut the smallest bits into 192 two and a half inch squares for the centers (I didn’t use Jenny’s speedy method).  Chain piecing these went quickly.  Then I used the tutorial’s method for making the giant flying geese from pairs of ten inch squares that I cut from my yardage. My background fabric is two white batiks and two white Grunges.  Unlike some MSQC patterns, this didn’t result in the dreaded bias edges, and it went very quickly.

IMG_2456When it came time for the borders, I found that my (newer) fabric had a ten inch repeat.  I wouldn’t have had to use it all, but I liked it all, and, again, a more narrow border would have looked out of scale.  I really liked how all the colors worked with my stars, and how it looked like I had pieced it from several fabrics.  I still didn’t realize how large it was until I measured it for my backing.

IMG_2460The three yards of newer fabric I had for the backing didn’t come close, of course, so I dug out a lot of older pine cone fabrics and added them in.  This now has everything you could want in a Christmas quilt!

IMG_2458To quilt it, I used Orange Peel quilting in the centers and a loop design I made up for the star points.  In the white areas I used feather wreaths and sort of a feather/snowflake/loop design.  Then I spent entirely too much time quilting the borders.  I did some loops, but also outlined every holly leaf and pine tree.  Yeah.  But it looks good.

needleI had some difficulty on the star blocks where my needle did this.  The #Twilters!, especially Sally, helped me through it.  Cleaning out the lint and slowing down helped some, but it really stopped when I changed to a size 90 needle.  I sew fast and I’m sure I was pushing and pulling this large quilt and bending that poor 70 I had been using.

IMG_2464And I topped it off with red and white striped binding.  Really, what more could you want in a nice large Christmas quilt?
