Another Cabin-ish Finish

img_2817bHere is the second of the small donation quilts made from 7.5″ “log cabin” blocks.  These have the large 3″ centers again, and I didn’t even bother with “logs”.  I just used 2.5″ strips, arranging the colors to imitate log cabin blocks.  I set them in the Barn Raising design.  It finished at 42″ x 63″ before washing.

img_2820Like the first one, I chose the fabrics for this quilt after first choosing the backing fabric.

After quilting between all the blocks, I quilted ribbons in the white areas (Sulky), and feathers in the print areas (Superior Living Colors).

Log Cabin Finish

img_2811These aren’t traditional log cabin blocks.  The centers are large, and there are only two “logs” on each side.  They are only 7.5 inches square, and there are fifty-four of them.  The quilt came out 42″ by 63″, but that was before it was washed.  I didn’t piece these to a foundation, just started adding to the center squares.  That made it much easier to chain piece them.

img_2814The colors are inspired by both Spring, and the backing fabric.

img_2813I quilted this with Sulky white and Superior Living Colors pink thread.  The bottom thread is Bottom Line.  The batting is Warm and Plush.

Scrappy Cabins 1 is Finished

Last week I got this project quilted and bound.  Yes, I see the, uh, design decision, near the lower left corner.  I mean, I see it now.  I partially blame all of you, who looked at the top here and never mentioned the problem.  (I’ve made sure to get lots of eyes on the pink and black one currently on my wall!)  I’m not too upset.  It gives it some character.  Not all furrows are straight, after all.

As the commenters said, I like the green and the pops of purple.  I used a shiny purple thread, Art Studio Colors by Superior, to quilt three wavy lines vertically and horizontally on each block.  I had already stitched in the ditch with Bottom Line, which is mostly invisible, but gives it sufficient quilting.

I made this for donation and to lighten my string bins, and I think it will be loved.

Log Cabin Finish

This warm, summery quilt was lots of fun to make, and it made a small dent in the string boxes.  It’s definitely a redo of this quilt, the one that was almost visible in Southern Weddings Magazine (Can’t see it?  Look behind the bride.)  Completely coincidentally, Southern Living Magazine contacted me this week to say that the wedding spread would be appearing in their upcoming issue.  No details yet.  Maybe there will  be a different shot that shows my quilt!

This time I used 12″ blocks with no borders.  The other quilt also had more variety in the centers because I made them from a charm pack, and cut these from yardage.

I free-motion quilted a sun in every block with a sunny orange Masterpiece thread from Superior.  I really enjoyed doing them and I like the way they turned out.

WIP Wednesday: 7/23/14

No, Lee isn’t having the linky for a couple of weeks, but I do have progress on a couple of things to report.

On the Log Cabin quilt, I finished all the quilting, trimmed it, and made the label.  With any luck I’ll bind it today.  I quilted each block (24) with a free-motion sun.  I marked two circles on each to guide me, and went from there, in one continuous line for each one.  At first they looked more like flowers, but I found that when I made the center spirals larger, they got more sun-like.  Either way, they are summery.

I like the way the back looks, too.

I got super organized and used a few spare minutes to make the binding the other day, but now I’m not so sure.  I usually like a dark edge to frame a quilt, but I might want to use the yellow and orange batik.  What do you think?

I spent last week’s cool, dry weather cutting and spray painting a new top for our deck table.  Somehow, during that fiercely cold winter, our glass table top shattered.  We just looked out and there it was on the deck.  I priced a piece of replacement glass.  No.  We looked at replacement sets, but didn’t see what we wanted.  Also, we just didn’t want to spend the money on that right now.  And there’s nothing wrong with the rest of the set.  So I bought a piece of plywood, cut it, primed it, painted it, and sealed it.  I hope to get a year or two out of it.  I’m pretty happy with way it turned out.  I knew the newsprint stencil was lifting a little, but I think it looks kind of airbrushed and interesting. We have an orange umbrella, and the other furniture is orange, blue, and lime.

 

AND, I settled on this tutorial for boxy pouches, and bought some interfacing.  I’m creeping up on that project.

Now I’m going to go clean out my purse to add money to my Piggy Bank Savings pitcher.  Thanks for all the comments on that post, especially Myrna, who warned me that old glass can be brittle.  I’ll add the coins carefully!

Log Cabin Finish

This quilt has been a while in the making, but it’s all finished now.  I completed the blocks in the middle of July, 2013, and put the top together sometime this winter.  Then I quilted it during the Quilts of Valor Sew-In and Sports Ball Sew-In this past weekend.  Monday I added a bright blue binding that I think is perfect.

This quilt is all made from stash.  The red “chimneys” are 2 1/2″ and 3 1/2″ patches from my bins.  The “logs” are all strings, except for the wolf and owl fabric.  This seemed like a good use for it, except that their eyes do stare at you!

This is being donated to Quilts of Valor, so I was planning a quick job on the quilting.  I stabilized it by quilting in the ditch between all the blocks using Bottom Line thread.

Then I marked a wavy line down either side of the columns and rows of blocks (I think straight lines would have looked odd on these really wonky cabins), and switched to a medium blue Masterpiece thread so the stitches would show more.  I used the walking foot, thinking I would sew on the marking and a line on either side.  I found I wanted to add one more line in each area (24 extra trips across the quilt), and that came close to catching every strip of fabric in at least a bit of quilting.

The plan was to quilt a star outline in each red patch, but, again, that didn’t seem like enough, so I stippled around all thirty-five of them.  I’m really happy with the effect.  It has enough quilting, and the waves make a nice effect as they undulate across the surface.

As always, I enjoyed sewing with the #Twilters and others who joined us for Super Bowl weekend.  The QOV Sew-In was very quiet by comparison, at least on Twitter.  Maybe Facebook and Instagram were more chatty.  I also got the idea folks were sewing in groups, so they had plenty of live company.  Maybe they got more done than those of us who sew with one hand and tweet with the other all day!  I won a prize from QOV, so I’m not complaining.

Getting it Done in November and December

I hope Judy does this again for next year.  I suppose I could make my own list, but somehow doing it with all of you makes it matter more, and I really am getting things done!

 

November Goals

1. Finish quilting my throw quilt from the Oh My Stars quiltalong.

2.  Finish piecing and quilting OMS throw for my shop,

3.  Finish piecing scrappy red, blue, gray cabin top (Quilt of Valor?)

4.  Piece aqua and gray chevron throw quilt for shop.

5.  Scrapitude Mystery Quilt, Step 3.

Pink and Green Cabins

I finished this quilt and finally found a pleasant day for photographing it.

It’s a big throw, 60″ x 82″.  I blogged more about making it here.

I know fabric is fabric, and the last inch costs the same as the first, but somehow a quilt made entirely out of strings seems like a dividend.

I quilted it with diagonal lines using the walking foot.  I used pink and green Superior “Living Colors” and “Nature’s Colors” threads.

Design Wall Monday

These heavy twelve-inch cabins don’t want to stay on my wall, and I can barely reach to pin them, even with my stool.  Still, I love the Streak of Lightning set.  I varied the size of the red centers to use up some scraps I had, and I think it adds some interest.  The logs are all in blues and grays, and each has one red or rust log.

Today, back from traveling, I made some final adjustments to the layout and then numbered the blocks with a Crayola washable marker.  Then I climbed up and took them all down and put them away for another time, because it’s not on my July list.  It’s just a scrappy donation top I was working on when I wanted some mindless piecing. I’ll only be home about a week between trips, and I want to try to piece the top for my SIL’s quilt before we head west.

Last week, when we were east, I bought fabric very reasonably at Zook Fabrics in Intercourse, PA.  They have a really large selection, but I stuck with pieces I needed for backs or sashing.  I think they’re beautiful, even if they are a bit muddy.

My Quilt in Southern Weddings Magazine

Hot Summer 1500

One of the exciting things that happened to me in 2012 was having a quilt selected to appear in Volume Five of Southern Weddings Magazine.  This is Hot Summer Cabins.  It was inspired by a charm pack of warm toned batiks that I used for the oversized center “chimneys”.  I kind of thought of it as a beach sunset.

The editor spotted it in my Etsy shop, and now that we can see the color scheme for the wedding shoot, it makes a lot of sense.  The colors sure are great together.  Unfortunately, that lovely tall bride stood right in front of it….  I hope it shows up better in another shot.

Lara Casey just let me know today that all three quilts in that photo are being given away on the web site today.  I can’t tell how long the giveaway will be open.  A few of the commenters are saying nice things about my quilt and requesting it as their prize.
