Color Spikes Quilt Finished

Color Spikes

This week I finished up this baby quilt.  The top went together very quickly, of course.  I spent much more time arranging the blocks (originally I thought all the blocks would have the color spikes, but that gave me secondary patterns.) than when I finally sewed them.  Then all the straight line quilting was tedious and time-consuming, but very worth it.  It gives it a great crinkly texture and saves it from being so plain.

The object was to use this very bright print.  It looks like a hand dye, and like it’s crinkled, but it’s just a print.  A print that went with nothing.  I put it with two gray and white dotted fabrics.  I don’t have the selvage, but I think they were “Mix and Match Dots”, or something like that.

I used the rest of the bright on the back.  Using the Fairy Frost and nearly the last of my Mirrored Dot is probably what started me into the new HST zigzag quilt.

Finish It Up Friday: Flower to go with Elephant

This little quilt with the floral fabric and flower and leaf quilting took very little time to make.  This was great and sad, because I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of making this, especially the lucious colors, and I wanted to keep gazing at it forever.

Don’t you love these spontaneous little quilts where you just pull fabric madly from your stash, cut with abandon (partly because it’s such a small project), and have it mostly pieced  before you have time to second-guess yourself?  These are my favorites.  It also felt good to work on something small after the queen quilt.

When I made Elephant, I was throwing some stash fabrics together to put a bright, boy’s quilt in my shop, but I decided to keep it.  While I worked on other projects, I kept my eyes open for more feminine stash fabrics that might do for the girl’s quilt.  My first grouping was too pink and floral, though I still want to use those fabrics together soon (for one thing, they’re still grouped in a basket under my cutting table…).  When I found this aqua print, I knew I had a companion quilt that would coordinate with Elephant without being matchy matchy or sickly sweet.

The cabins are Kona Salmon, Coffee, and Azure, with a green Grunge.  The solids aren’t dead matches to the print, but they work.  The sashing is an off-white grunge.  Every block has a quilted flower in the center (Sulky white rayon), and the sashing is quilted with leafy vines.  I know, leaves again, but I love to quilt them almost as much as feathers.

My twin great niece and nephew aren’t due till August, but these little quilts just happened and they feel right.

Of course, my studio is a mess because all the pulled fabric is still out (but I did cut up and put away all the scraps!), plus I have a pile of orphan blocks I want to use on the back of the new scrap quilt I’ve started, plus someone contacted me about making a baseball baby quilt, so that fabric is out…  It looks…creative!

Design Wall Monday: Phillip Jacobs Roses!

There is really nothing on my design wall, because I have a queen sized backing I need to make today…  But if there were, it would be this.  I totally love this rose fabric, and have been hoarding saving it for something special.  Now I’m thinking about using it for a baby quilt for the impending (August) great niece.  I just happen to also have these fabrics in stash:  Kona cream, Basic Grey Grunge, and something called Krystal from Michael Miller.

Here are a couple of options I’m playing around with (if I were spending time on this).  The plain sashing mimics Elephant a little more, but I really like the print sashing (which would not look purply like this, much more pink).  I’m thinking.  What do you think?

Design Wall Monday: A bright baby quilt

No blocks on my wall yet, just fabric, as I play around with choices for a brightly colored baby quilt.  I love this half-yard of polka dot batik.  My current plan is to cut it into five inch squares and frame them with the other two fabrics.  I’ll choose the centers so that the turquoise fabric doesn’t surround turquoise dots.  The lighter fabric is quite calm in color, but this quilt will still have a lot going on.  Hmmm.

Baby Quilt Finished

I finished up the baby quilt yesterday, and it’s all washed and dried and crinkly.  This looks different from other baby quilts I’ve made, but I like it.

It’s bright and bold and energetic, and I think it will be perfect for a little boy.  I bound it with rayon blanket binding for the touchable edges.  This finish doesn’t seem to sell well for me, but I almost always use it on gifts, because I know the babies like it.  This is made completely from stash.

Will back 2I like this stained glass look where the sun brings the other colors through it.

Wills detailThe piecing and cutting were very quick, perhaps three hours.  The quilting, however, took around six hours.  There’s lots of it, in the ditches and through the block centers.  I used Superior Bottom Line in a pale blue on top and bottom.

The finished size is 36″ x 48″.  I always consider that the binding will take about 2″ off of each side of the design, so I usually add borders.  I didn’t this time, because I thought it was okay to cut off the edges of these Disappearing Four Patch blocks, and I think it works.

WIP Wednesday: Baby Quilt

The Disapearing Four Patch blocks I made to donate to Sandy relief kind of intrigued me, and I wanted to try them with a variety of prints for a scrappy look.  I decided to use them in this baby quilt for the new son of my “nephew”,  the son of my friend and college roommate.

I used three baseball prints and some fabrics I thought coordinated, for a total of six fabrics.  (I won’t say I hang onto fabric, but one of these baseball prints was used in the nephew’s high school graduation quilt…)

I still have five more blocks to make, hopefully today, but I think I like how this is coming out.  It seems to have lots of energy.
