Sunday Stash Report: 1/10/16

So, fabric did come this week, ten yards, but I also finished enough to offset it and remain on the destashing side of things.  Next week may be another story.

I was geared up to make a baby quilt (for a shower today!), but had to wait on the fabric to arrive.  To fill the time, I made up three donation pillowcases from stash (3 yards).  That led me to find a piece of elephant fabric that wanted to be a quilt, so I made it into one (3.5 yards).  The navy sports fabric finally arrived Thursday afternoon, so then I made that quilt (3.5 yards).  I seized an opportunity for photos yesterday, so I’ll post about the quilts later.

This week: +10 yards,  -10 yards
This year: +10 yards,  -12 yards
Net destashed in 2016:  2 yards

I hope you’re getting time to sew up your stash.

The bad news (sort of) is that a box of fabric arrived from Fabric Shack.  The good news is that the Kona Snow inside allowed me to finish this top, and there’s a beautiful (and sale!) backing, too.  So the numbers will change again quickly.

This week I finished two pillowcases, and a pair of arm protectors for the upholstered chair in my kitchen.

This week:  + 10.5 yards,  – 3 yards
This year:  + 26 yards,  -12.25 yards
Net fabric destashed added in 2015:  13.75 yards

Also added to my studio is this pretty bale jar from the antique mall.  From the pins, it sure looks like it has some sewing experience, doesn’t it?  I’m using it to hold fabric markers.

Hope you’re either destashing, or adding really good stuff!  I’m linking up to Patchwork Times.

Nothing in, nothing out this week.

This week: +0 yards, -0 yards

This year: +27.5 yards, -32 yards

Net stash used this years: -4.5 yards

I thought there would be finishes, but I hit a snag.  When I went to sandwich the finished tops, I found that the triangle one was way too large.  Not only would it not have fit the customer’s furniture (I had measured), but it didn’t fit on the backing fabric, and I didn’t want a pieced backing for this.  As I took all the blocks apart, trimmed each one, and sewed them back together, I realized what I had done.  I made my HSTs using the diagonal line method, and I added 7/8″ to the raw size I wanted the blocks (5 1/2″), not the finished size (5″) that I should have.  I think I’ll remember that in the future…

Anyway, it’s all quilted now, and it’s companion is partially quilted.  I expect to finish both this weekend as I sew along with the #Twilters at the President’s Day Sew-In, #PDSI , which, of course we’re making last all weekend, because we’re like that.  Please join us.

Okay, some fabric was purchased, but I can justify explain.  It was backing for Scrapitude, and White and Snow Kona solid. And some of the Snow is for the current commissions.  So it was necessary.

AND, the Log Cabin QOV was finished, so that’s ten and a half yards out.

This week: +12 yards, -10.5 yards

Hope you’re using the stash this winter!

Sunday Stash Report: 1/12/14

Nothing in, and nothing out this week.  I’ve been working away at the Bright Strings quilt, and the back (all from stash as well) is almost finished, but it’s progressing at a snail’s pace.  I’ve had back spasms all week and can’t sit at the machine for very long at a time.  Hopefully it will get finished this week.

This year:  +0 yards,  -10 yards

In other news, I have a new ironing board.  My tall son leaned on the old one, bending the legs and producing a permanent slant.  I don’t know how obvious the problem appears here, but a.) Yuri kept rolling off, and b.) I kept cursing as the fabric and iron slid off.

image

The new one is Bed Bath and Beyond’s “professional” model.  It was too expensive, but I used a coupon.  I wanted one quickly, and the main review complaint on the ones from Amazon was that they were arriving damaged, so I went with this.  It is 18″ wide, which I like, and it has it’s own electrical cord and outlet for plugging in the iron, so I am no longer fighting the cord as I iron.  It has a built in iron rest and cord guide.  The padding seems pretty thin and the cover is a rough, cream colored fabric, but I guess I know how to fix those things.  Since I haven’t been in the studio much, I haven’t really used it a lot, but so far, so good.

Hope you’re using your stash this year.

I’m writing to you this morning from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  I have been lame and not taken any new photos of this beautiful countryside, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

I also didn’t photograph the new fabric I bought, but it was 4 yards of batik.  You’ll agree that’s necessary, won’t you?

A few Christmas gifts were purchased down here, but this pin is just for me, by local artist Sharon M. Hollar.  Yes, it’s my third pin of hers, but we’re not keeping track of jewelry here, are we?

This week:  +4 yards,  -0.5 yards
YTD:  +135 yards,  -231.75 yards
Net stash used in 2013:  96.75

Just wait till next week!

Lots of little sewing, not too much fabric used, but none came in, so I’m edging toward my goal of 100 yards destashing.  The holiday wall hangings took 2.5 yards.  Working on using up really old Christmas stash.

This week:  +0 yards,  -2.5 yards

YTD:  +123 yards,  -205.5 yards

Net stash used in 2013:  -82.5 yards

How are you doing with your goals?

Sunday Stash Report: 6/16/13

Happy Father’s Day!  I did skip last week’s report, because I hadn’t added any fabric or used any (I don’t count till I have a finish.)  Also, I am dismally behind on all of your blogs and podcasts, so that would be why you aren’t receiving any comments or encouragement from me.  I’m with you all in spirit!

This was a good week, because the Tulip Quilt used 10.5 yards, and I used 2 more for a pair of pillowcases.  All that tulip fabric is very nearly gone, but there are strings… Hmm.  Log cabin?  Sometimes it seems as though we never use it all up.

This week:  +0 yards,  -12.5 yards

YTD:  =83.5 yards,  -157 yards

Net stash used in 2013:  -72.5 yards

How are you coming with your stash reduction?

I have a new project coming up as I will soon receive a package of baby clothes to use in a commission quilt and pillow cover.  Do any of you have any experience doing a quilt like this?  Know any links to nice memory projects like this?  The client and I have communicated about the design, but I’d like to see lots of ideas.

Lots of fabric pulled out, piled up, and all over the design wall, but only one small finish this week.  That’s okay.  My numbers are good.  I’m especially pleased to be finding uses for some long-time Stash Dogs.  Those “what was I thinking?” pieces, or fabrics that are pretty/striking/interesting by themselves, but don’t go with anything else.  Or that looked different online.  Making some progress on those.  I find that if I leave them out, or at least at the top of their baskets, then they are more likely to occur to me when I need something.

How about you?  Are you using it up to make way for new, pretty fabric?

Sunday Stash Report and March-a-Long 3/24/13

Stash fabric

Yes, there’s more fabric!  Fourteen yards, to be exact.  But it was all on sale, and mostly nice basics that I need.  Besides, remember that I had to buy some so that I didn’t make my goal of 100 yards too early.  The Pink and Gray quilt used 7.75 yards, all from stash, so it’s really like I only bought 6.25….

This week:  +14 yards,  -7.75 yards

YTD:  +35.75 yards,  -90.5 yards

Net stash used in 2013:  -54.75 yards

How are you doing on destashing?

march-a-long-2013

Yes, Darla, I’ve sort of been marching along this week.  There were a couple of days when I got no sewing done, but I wrote a blog post, sent Frances some fabric, photographed quilts, etc.  I must have logged some hours, because I did make the pink and gray quilt, so you can tell I’ve been trying.  Keep it up, everyone!
