Sunday Stash Report: 9/15/19

20190913_114644 (1).jpgSo, the fabric that came in.  Did you know that Fat Quarter Shop has its 12 lb. “Grab Bag” boxes again?  I stumbled on them unexpectedly (on sale), and I’ve wanted one for so long I just had to get one.  I know.  I know.  Well, some enhancement was part of the goal.  This is just a…big chunk of enhancement.  (Note:  Today I can’t find these Grab Bags.  I guess you’ll have to check back till they have them again.)

I was initially a little disappointed in this box.  I was looking for bright colors and bold prints, and it took awhile to find any.  Are reproduction calico prints really making a comeback lately?  I sure got a lot of them.  Also, I started sneezing non-stop as I went through the box.  Please tell me I’m not allergic to cotton!  I assume it was the finishes, so they all went right into the washer and dryer.

As I was folding them, I began to look upon the fabrics more favorably.  I got a ton of white-to-cream neutrals, a stack of black prints, various navys, greens, and grays that I really like, a little bit of Grunge, and a single piece of Kaffe!  Maybe a third of the fabrics were prints that I would never have chosen.  But that was the point of a grab bag, to give depth to my stash.  So.

One difference I noticed from several years ago is that there weren’t too many one-yard cuts.  There were lots of half yards, and lots of smaller pieces, even a broken layer cake.  I’m sure it will all be useful.

With all the smaller pieces of fabric, I can’t begin to measure it.  I’m just going to go with Fat Quarter Shop’s estimate and say twenty yards.  That’s bad enough!

PicMonkey Collage TransThe sewing!  It pales in comparison, but I did use four yards this week to make these wall hangings from printed panels.  Now you see where those little stars went!  Look for them soon in my Etsy shop.

This week: + 20 yards, – 4 yards

This year: + 74.5 yards, – 72.75 yards

Net destashed added in 2019: 1.75 yards

Ah, well, back behind the starting line.  I still have three and a half months left to destash this year!

Better luck to you!

WIP Wednesday

Sewing is happening, slowly. I made two of these little 4.5″ stars that to go into Christmas wall hangings. I remember now that I don’t like to work small. Those are basted and ready to be quilted. Not today, though. It’s over 90°F here today, so maybe first thing in the morning…

I do want to share some links with you.

Here is Diagonal Seam Tape from Cluck, Cluck, Sew, to help with HSTs and flying geese.

These Fabric Bowl Covers from Quilt Social are new to me.

This Improv Garden quilt by Cynthia of Quilting is More Fun Than Housework is my current favorite quilt online.

And, finally, if you’re looking for a place to donate small quilts and pillowcases, here’s a link.

That’s all for now. Hope you’re enjoying your sewing!

August / September Goals, and Sunday Stash Report

2019-08-29 15.11.01

Wow, it’s been almost a month!  Sorry about that.  But I’m sewing again!  So here I am.

Entertaining, home renovation, and hot weather got in the way of sewing last month.  And, I was just plain tired of Handy Dandy.  The quilting was going fine, but I got sick of it and quit going up to work on it.  So I dumped it under a table, and started some more projects.

I made this baby quilt from a panel (yes, it’s a variation on one I’ve done before).

2019-08-31 12.18.46

Then I used scraps to start some of these Christmas coasters.  Next up are some Christmas pieces for my shop  (doing better on sales lately!).

August Goals:

  1. Finish quilting Handy DandyNo.  I made progress, but not done.
  2. Bind Handy Dandy.  Nope!
  3. Make a baby quilt from a “Moon and Back” panel for my shop.  Yes!  Here.

September Goals:

  1. Make some Christmas coasters from scraps.
  2. Make a wall hanging from a printed panel.
  3. Start a nordic-themed quilt from a printed panel.

Meanwhile, in the Stash:

This week: + 3 yards, – 3.25 yards

This year: + 54.5 yards, – 68.75 yards

Net destashed added in 2019: 14.25 yards

Looking forward to seeing more of you as we move into fall here in the north!

July / August Goals

Facebook Cover Collage 4

Well, if you keep your goals really modest you can achieve them, right?  That’s what I did for July, and that’s what I’m doing again for August.  Summer is in full swing here, along with traveling, and entertaining friends and family.

July Goals:

  1. Baste Handy Dandy quilt.  Yes!
  2. Begin quilting Handy Dandy.  Yes!
  3. Make red, white, and blue star blocks for Kat’s Covered in Love July/August drive.  Yes!

August Goals

  1. Finish quilting Handy Dandy.  (This is a large, heavy quilt, and I don’t always feel light dealing with it.  I’m pecking away.)
  2. Bind Handy Dandy.
  3. Make a baby quilt from a “Moon and Back” panel for my shop.

My best wishes to all of you.  I hope you’re sewing and finding peace where ever you can.

WIP Wednesday: Quilting a Little

This week I’ve been working away at quilting Handy Dandy. I’ve been using the walking foot to quilt in the ditch along all the gold diagonal sashing and the rows that go through the centers of all the blocks. Now I need to do the border sashing and baste the edges.

So, after a number of days (short amounts of time each day to spare my shoulders, etc.), it looks as though I’ve done nothing to it. But we know it’s all firmly anchored down and ready for whatever brilliant quilting I decide to do in the blocks, setting triangles and border. Just waiting for that brilliance to strike…

Our weather here has been wonderful, sunny and moderate, so I should make the most of it.

Stay tuned.

Sunday Stash Report: 7/14/19

Heres a little patriotic spirit for you in July!

Not much sewing this week, but no new fabric, either.

I’ve been uninspired to see, but that’s when a simple project like donation blocks comes in handy. I pulled fabric one day, cut and tried out a block one day, cut the rest, sewed two, then three, and, finally chain-pieced the last four in record time. So I have a dozen blocks ready to ship off to Kat for her July/August block drive, using 2.25 yards of fabric. In the process, I also found about 2 yards to dispose of or donate.

This star isn’t very original, but it worked for me this time. They’re super easy, with very few points to match. Also, I have lots of 3.5″ scraps, so a 16-patch star worked well for me. (I see that they look really similar to the ones I made last year, but that was a different construction technique. I made these using sew-and-flip flying geese.)

This week: + 0 yards, – 4.25 yards

This year: + 50 yards, – 65.50 yards

Net destashed added in 2019: 15.50 yards

Are you getting much sewing done this summer?

June/ July Goals

2019-05-30 15.58.42-1

Since it’s the beginning middle of July, I thought I’d report on my goals.  Sheesh!  Well, it’s been hot and humid here, we’ve been working on our house, and we hosted the 4th of July party, and helped entertain out-of-town guests, so those are my excuses.

June Goals:

  1. Make back and binding for Handy Dandy.  Yes.  I had just enough of some bird fabric that’s been hanging around forever.
  2. Baste and begin quilting Handy Dandy.  No.
  3. Make a baby quilt from recent scraps.  Yes, here.

Bonus:  I had enough scraps to make this baby quilt, and this one!

Not bad, really.  And I’ve met part of my general goals of keeping up on photos and clerical stuff.

However, I have no such hopes for (the rest of) July.  We take a lot of day trips, my garden keeps me busy, I’m reading, we’re taking an overnight trip at the end of the month…

July Goals:

  1. Baste Handy Dandy quilt.
  2. Begin quilting Handy Dandy.
  3. Make red, white, and blue star blocks for Kat’s Covered in Love July/August drive.

Sports Baby Quilt #3

2019-06-26 16.59.54

This week I finished the third of these little quilts (the others are here and here). This is definitely my favorite. I know it’s just squares sewn together, but I really like each fabric and the quilting I did on them.

2019-06-26 17.00.22

The solids are Kona Bluejay and Orange (from my stash), and the net print is Grafic from You + Me by Latifah Saafir for Hoffman. (Okay, it’s really chain link fence, but play along. Or it could be the fence around your outdoor court, all right?)

2019-06-25 10.32.46

(I really like this fabric collection. I’d consider doing a project based on these fabrics.)

2019-06-26 17.00.06

I started by quilting in all the ditches with the walking foot and Bottom Line (60 wt.) light blue thread. Then I switched to Masterpiece (50 wt.) in a deeper blue that matches the Bluejay. I quilted diagonally through at the blocks in both directions. I switched to the free motion foot to add circles to the “basketballs” and grids to the blue squares. The bottom thread is white Bottom Line.

With the diagonals already stitched, I was able to stitch the 1″ grids in each square without cutting the thread.

While waiting for Yuri to show up, I took a photo of my husband’s stream and pond. You can spot Yuri hurrying in behind the chairs on the right.

So, yes, this is as fun and snuggly as it looks.

I’m linking up to Finish it up Friday at Confessions of a Fabric Addict and Let’s Make Baby Quilts at Michelle’s Romantic Tangle.
